Au Bon Pain Company acquired St. Louis Bread Company in 1993 for USD23 million.

The company emerged in 1997 with the new company name, which is derived from the Latin word for ‘breadbasket.’ The new company’s name aligns with the Spanish and Catalan words for the same concept. The original name was retained in Missouri, and 20 bakery-cafes in the St. Louis area were rebranded together under the St. Louis Bread Company banner.

·        On July 11, 2017, JAB Holding Company acquired Panera Bread for USD7.5 billion, and on November 8, 2017, Panera announced that company president Blaine Hurst would replace founder Ron Schaech as CEO.
